The City and the Water
Last summer you could just make out the roof of a sinking house above the water surface of the Westsingel. Fortunately, Amersfoort is not yet underwater. However, artist Willem de Haan, with his work 'Motor Home', draws attention with humour to the destructive power water can have.
Water is useful — in fact, vital — but in our low-lying country it can sometimes also be dangerous and life-threatening. Museum Flehite shows the relationship between people and water in the past, the present and the future. A mix of old and new art, photographs and maps brings the water stories of Amersfoort to life. Young and old dive in and discover the conflicting roles the element plays in everyone's life.
Water as a source of inspiration
Artists past and present reflect in their work on the bond between people and water. Through Frank Halmans's scale models of piping, you realise, for example, how remarkable it is that water comes out of the tap. With the Dreamscapes by Rob Sweere, you wonder whether the still landscapes refer to the past, present or future. And in 'To water is to Be' by Nanno Simonis, water is captured in a transparent cube in which it shines, drips, flows and streams, taking on all kinds of contrasting forms of appearance.
