4 Stars from de Volkskrant for Carla Kogelman

24 June 2026 ·

Opening a new exhibition is always a celebration, but also nerve-wracking: how will it be received? That is why we are especially proud of the review that de Volkskrant wrote about our exhibition Carla Kogelman: A Closer Look.

"She (Carla Kogelman) waits patiently until her presence is no longer noticed, and can catch the full life of a child in the act… with precious results." — de Volkskrant (★★★★)

★★★★ – de Volkskrant

"Museum Flehite presents in her home city of Amersfoort, under the title A Closer Look, the first retrospective of Kogelman. Besides her powerful black-and-white photography, what stands out above all is how deeply she penetrates into the inner world of children. She is able to reveal their character with the camera, before it increasingly disappears behind the mask of adulthood and its associated conventions."

About the exhibition

Carla Kogelman: A Closer Look is a major retrospective of her work. The photographs show vulnerable and pure moments from life. They are about growing up, identity and sometimes about inevitable farewell.

The exhibition makes room for joy, grief, playfulness, sport and cheerfulness — an overview of life itself, of children and adults alike, told through photography.

The exhibition is on show until 20 September 2026.
