Collection
Discover over 27,000 objects, artworks and stories that together show how Amersfoort changed and lived through the centuries.
Collection
The collection of Museum Amersfoort shows how the city has grown, changed and been experienced. You will find paintings, drawings, prints and objects from different eras. Sometimes precious, sometimes simple. But always connected to people, places and stories from Amersfoort.
Over more than 140 years the collection grew to over 27,000 objects. Together they paint a picture of the city through the centuries. From prehistoric urns of the Bronze Age to Mathias Withoos's View of Amersfoort. From the portrait of Leendert Nicasiusz by Jacob van Campen to the city keys of Emperor Napoleon. A beer barrel from 1870 and a freedom skirt from 1945 also tell their own story.
These objects bring history close. They show what people made, preserved, used and considered important.

Collection story
The city keys of Napoleon
In October 1811 Napoleon travelled through the Low Countries. During this journey he also visited Amersfoort. The city wanted to welcome the emperor enthusiastically and went all out. The centrepiece of the visit was two symbolic city keys on a green velvet cushion.

More about the collection
Search the collection
A large part of the collection can be viewed online. The collection system contains paintings, drawings, prints and objects made of silver, wood, iron, paper, plastic and more. Search by name, maker, period or subject and discover the stories behind the objects.
Stories with objects
The collection grows not only through new acquisitions, but also through knowledge from visitors. Do you recognise a place, person or event? Or do you see something that could be improved? Let us know. Your addition can help make the story of Amersfoort more complete.
Loans
Museum Amersfoort regularly lends objects to other museums and cultural institutions. This means special pieces from the collection can be seen outside Amersfoort too. In turn, we also receive loans for exhibitions in the museum.
A loan makes new stories and surprising combinations possible. Objects gain a different context and allow visitors to look at art, heritage and history in a new way.
Image rights
For some objects we do not show a photo, because the image rights belong to someone else or are not yet clear. Do you think information is missing or something is incorrect? Please contact the museum.
Donate an object
Do you have an object that fits the history of Amersfoort and the region? Please contact us. Preferably send a photo and a brief explanation. We would love to see whether the object adds something to the collection.
