Across Fields and Roads
Let yourself be carried along the most beautiful places in the Netherlands across the centuries, captured by old masters and contemporary artists. In the national theme year 'Ode to the Landscape', Museum Flehite focuses on the diversity of the landscape in the Netherlands in general, and around Amersfoort in particular. With a varied exhibition of landscape painting and drawing, the museum showcases the magnificent nature found in the Netherlands.
1750 to the present
The exhibition 'Across Fields and Roads' begins in the eighteenth century, but landscape art from later periods is also extensively featured. The focus is on the period from 1750 to the present.
A selection has been made from the museum's own collection and that of the municipality of Amersfoort, which was recently (partially) placed in the museum's care. This includes the so-called Armando core collection. From this collection, a so-called "Schuldig Landschaft" has been added to the exhibition. Several works from private collections in Amersfoort are also on display.
A colourful ensemble of Dutch landscapes
A colourful ensemble of landscapes has been selected from the museum collection. Ranging from a Pointillist forest view by Jakob Nieweg, a realistic meadow landscape by Piet Mondriaan, a modernist Frisian polder landscape by Gerrit Benner, a dreamy salt-marsh landscape by Hendrik Jan Wolter, to a colourist North Holland polder landscape by Dirk Breed.
Jordanus Hoorn
The exhibition pays special attention to the landscape drawings of Jordanus Hoorn (1753–1833). Hoorn received artistic training in Haarlem, but Amersfoort was his base for the greater part of his life — he was born and died there.
In 2014, the descendants of this Amersfoort artist donated an extensive collection of drawings to Museum Flehite.
Hoorn, at the time 'drawing master' of Amersfoort, set out from the city 'across fields and roads' with his drawing materials at the ready. He made topographically accurate work in a naturalistic drawing style. Sometimes he noted on the back of the sheet where the scene was located: Groot Zandbrink, Leusden, 'Along a stream near Amersfoort', Voorthuizen, Nijkerk and so on. Hoorn also made a number of cityscapes of Amersfoort in oil paint. Museum Flehite holds several fine examples, which can be seen in the museum's permanent collection.
Contemporary landscapes
The exhibition also brings together work by various contemporary artists: pencil drawings by Peter Tekelenburg, landscape paintings in oil by John Konijn, paintings in mixed media by Edith Meijering and photography by Hans Withoos.
There are monumental drawings of the Wadden Sea by Annemieke Harkema and serene landscapes in the north of Friesland and Groningen by photographer Frans Kanters. Together with the old masters, they offer a special and varied view of the Dutch landscape across the centuries.
