Absurd

A brass band without music, a fan club for Prince Bernhard, an art impresario who gave art a platform his whole life. That is Ron Jagers. In the film Trammelant & Triangel we get a glimpse into a day in his life. In it, Ron is paired with the philosopher Diogenes, a kindred spirit who resisted the established order in the same contrary yet humorous way. The film forms part of the four-part series ABSURD, in which each time a visual artist fictionally meets a related philosopher and receives extraordinary guests throughout the day.

One day, one place, one take.

The film — which lasts more than six hours and is shown in black and white — was recorded in a single take in his studio. This location can best be described as a chaotic installation of found objects, artworks, kitsch, ready-mades, books and machines. Or as he himself calls it: "my living room." In this location, the film — which is on show throughout the museum's opening hours — seeks an answer to the question: How does someone like Ron Jagers deal with all the absurdities of life?

Diogenes

Diogenes was born on the coast of the Black Sea. Arriving in Athens, he lived in a wine barrel in the marketplace and pestered passers-by with sharp questions. He dealt in one-liners, performances and absurd advice. He was in favour of free love and against slavery. Anti-authoritarian. "Frankness" was the core of his philosophy. He was called "the dog" because he urinated against everything. He did not believe in an afterlife; he wanted to embrace life in all its fullness — here and now. Diogenes did not found a school, but did influence other thinkers, such as the Stoic Seneca, the humanist Erasmus and the critic of power Foucault.

ABSURD is an initiative of Gerard de Kleijn, who together with the four artists wants to offer an alternative to a world full of seriousness and violence — something more playful, light-footed, loving and, of course, a little absurd.

The project consists of four films, of which Trammelant & Triangel is on show at Museum Flehite.
